KeyVR allows designers, clients, and stakeholders to easily view and manipulate models, scroll through model sets, multi-materials and virtual environments to make faster, better decisions.

  1. Prepare your scene - Import CAD files into KeyShot, create materials, environments, animations, cameras and save as a BIP (or KSP) file. Take into account the current KeyVR Capabilities. For more tips on setting up your scene visit the Scene setup page.

  2. Start KeyVR - Press the (blue star) KeyVR button in the KeyShot Toolbar (KeyShot 8 and forward) or launch the KeyVR application directly.

  3. Experience - Now you can inspect your 3D model in a photo realistic rendering, and make design decisions from the animations, multi-materials, model-sets and different environments. The 3D geometry can be inspected by walking around, "flying", teleporting, selecting predefined camera and manipulating the position and appearance of individual objects in the scene.

Headset Compatibility

KeyVR supports the free OpenXR standard, which almost all headsets on the market at this point of writing have adopted. Here is a more detailed overview:

Requirements

Oculus

Meta Quest, Rift series

  • Quest headsets need to be connected to your PC via Link cable or AirLink (wireless).

    1. The Oculus app needs to be installed and running on your PC. Download here.

    2. The Unknown Sources option in the Oculus app needs to be enabled (Settings → General → Unknown Sources).

    3. The Oculus app needs to be set as the active OpenXR runtime. This should be the case by default. If not, go to Settings → General → OpenXR Runtime in the Oculus app and click on “Set Oculus as active“.

    4. For Quest headsets only: KeyVR runs on your PC, not on the headset itself. You can connect your Quest to your PC with an Oculus Link cable or wirelessly with AirLink over Wifi. Plug the Link cable into your headset and PC or put on your headset and make sure it is connected to your Wifi for AirLink. Also make sure that the Oculus app is running on your PC. In the headset’s main menu you can use your controllers to access the “Quick settings” menu (click on the area with the clock, battery and Wifi icon in the gray status bar in front of you). Then select Link or AirLink and follow the instructions in the dialog to finish the setup. You will enter a gray environment when the connection is established. Now start KeyVR on your PC.

    Pico

    Neo series

    1. Pico headsets need to be connected to your PC via cable or wirelessly.

    2. The Pico Link app needs to be installed and running on your PC. Download here.

    3. The Pico Link app also needs to be running on your headset. Note that this app comes pre-installed on the headset.

    4. Steam needs to be installed. Download here.

    5. SteamVR needs to be installed through Steam and running. Download here.

    6. SteamVR needs to be set as the active OpenXR runtime. This should be the case by default. If not, click on the SteamVR menu button in the top-left of the window, then select Settings → Show Advanced Settings → Developer and click on the “Set SteamVR as OpenXR runtime” button.

    SteamVR

    Valve Index, HTC Vive series

    1. Steam needs to be installed on your PC. Download here.

    2. SteamVR needs to be installed through Steam and running on your PC. Download here.

    3. SteamVR needs to be set as the active OpenXR runtime. This should be the case by default. If not, click on the SteamVR menu button in the top-left of the window, then select Settings → Show Advanced Settings → Developer and click on the “Set SteamVR as OpenXR runtime” button.

    Varjo

    VR, XR, Aero series

    1. The Varjo Base app needs to be installed and running on your PC. Download here.

    2. Enable OpenXR support in the Varjo Base app. This should be the case by default. If not, go to System → OpenXR in Varjo Base and enable the toggle.

    Windows Mixed Reality

HP Reverb, Lenovo Explorer series and many more

    1. The Mixed Reality Portal app needs to be installed and running on your PC. Download through the Microsoft Store here. Note that this app comes pre-installed with some versions of Windows.

    2. Steam needs to be installed on your PC. Download here.

    3. SteamVR needs to be installed through Steam and running on your PC. Download here.

    4. The Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR plugin needs to be installed through Steam on your PC. Download here.

    5. SteamVR needs to be set as the active OpenXR runtime. This needs to be done manually as the Mixed Reality Portal app registers itself as the active runtime instead of SteamVR. Click on the SteamVR menu button in the top-left of the window, then select Settings → Show Advanced Settings → Developer and click on the “Set SteamVR as OpenXR runtime” button.

    System Requirements

The following system requirements should be understood as a rough guideline for most average users. The quality and smoothness of your experience is determined by several other factors: The complexity of your scenes (triangle count and amount of textures), the type of headset (eye resolution, field of view and preferred refresh rate) and the graphics quality settings in the KeyVR preferences.

If you are running highly complex scenes (10+ million triangles) with a very high-resolution headset on Ultra graphics for example, you may well find that following our recommended system requirements exactly may not suffice to offer a smooth 90Hz experience. In this case you could either reduce your graphics settings in KeyVR, especially the render scale in the custom mode, or upgrade to a more powerful GPU.

On the other hand, it may well be possible to successfully run KeyVR on a computer with weaker components than what we list as the minimum required if you are only viewing basic scenes with a low-resolution headset and on Low graphics settings, or can tolerate a low framerate in VR.
